Handle media queries in React with hooks

Hooks let you use state and other React features without writing a class.

useMediaQuery()

This simple hook makes it easy to share && render components, logic, styling, etc. through the use of media queries from your JSX code.

Create the hook

hooks/useMediaQuery.jsx

import { useState, useEffect } from "react";

const useMediaQuery = (query) => {
  const [matches, setMatches] = useState(false);

  useEffect(() => {
    const media = window.matchMedia(query);
    if (media.matches !== matches) {
      setMatches(media.matches);
    }
    const listener = () => setMatches(media.matches);
    window.addEventListener("resize", listener);
    return () => window.removeEventListener("resize", listener);
  }, [matches, query]);

  return matches;
}

export default useMediaQuery;

Use the hook

App.js

import React from "react";
import "./index.css";
import useMediaQuery from "./hooks/useMediaQuery";

function App() {
  // You can use any @media property
  const isDesktop = useMediaQuery('(min-width: 960px)');

  return (
    <div className="App">
      {isDesktop ? <h1>Desktop</h1> : <h1>Mobile</h1>}
      <Navbar isDesktop={isDesktop}/>
    </div>
  );
}

// Navbar component
const Navbar = ({isDesktop}) => (
  <nav className={`base ${isDesktop ? "desktop" : "mobile"}`}>
    <Icon />
    <Icon />
    <Icon />
    <Icon />
  </nav>
);

// SVG icon component
const Icon = () => (
  <svg viewBox="0 0 512 512">
    <path
      fill="currentColor"
